Amethyst Name Details

The name Amethyst is derived from the ancient Greek mythological story of the wine god Dionysus and the young maiden Amethystos. According to legend, Dionysus became enraged by an insult and vowed to unleash his wrath upon the next mortal who crossed his path. Amethystos, a young girl on her way to pay homage to the goddess Diana, was blamed for the insult and found herself caught in Dionysus' wrath. As Dionysus lifted his hand to strike her, Diana turned the girl into a clear crystal quartz to protect her from harm. Dionysus, filled with remorse, poured his wine over the crystal quartz, transforming it into a beautiful purple stone - the gem now known as amethyst.
